Jack Marsden Mayer’s Humpback Whale is made entirely from driftwood (on a steel frame) which he collects from beaches near his home in Wanganui. Driftwood creatures are what Jack does — last exhibition he did a huge elephant. Originally from Britain, Jack, like many Kiwis old and new, has a passion for whales. It seems fitting for such a sculpture to take its place on the coast of New Zealand, a country that continues to lead the fight against the barbarism of the illegal Japanese whaling programme.
