It looks like a dream, or part of a fantasy from a Tolkien novel, but it’s the real thing, the skies around the Southern Alps being able to create extraordinary palettes of colour and texture. I’ve chosen to display in this in black and white as I feel it suits the mood more than colour. It was taken with a 17mm-wide lens on a tripod at 1/30th second with an aperture of f22 to bring depth to the shot from the rocks in the foreground to Mt Cook in the distance. Lake Pukaki and its environs which include Mt Cook National Park are among the most beautiful areas of New Zealand’s South Island. But picking the right weather to visit can be a hit and miss affair and on this evening we were extremely lucky!
