One of those lazy, hazy summer days I just can’t wait to experience again soon. This is taken at Mangawhai Heads, about 90 minutes north of Auckland, from the deck of a holiday rental home. At low tide the sand bar in the photo is exposed and people wander on to it, sometimes casting out a line where the estuary meets the sea. Sharks are known to cruise up this estuary and I was once warned by a lifeguard that swimming at that moment wasn’t the best idea — but there hasn’t been a fatal shark attack in New Zealand in decades, I believe. The photo is treated with a grainy infrared effect using Silver Efex Pro. I wanted a minimalistic appearance devoid of structure to emphasise a hazy summer’s morning, like a mirage.
